Make Room for God to Move

Isaiah 40:3

"A voice of one calling: 'In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.'" 

When we hear this verse, it's easy to picture someone clearing a road through the wilderness.

But Isaiah isn't talking about dirt paths.

He's talking about our hearts.

In ancient times, when a king was about to visit a city, people would prepare the roads ahead of him. They removed rocks, filled holes, and straightened crooked paths so the king could travel without obstruction.

Isaiah uses that picture to ask a different question:

If God wanted to move freely in your life today, would there be anything in the way?

Notice what the verse says.

"Prepare the way for the Lord."

God is the One who comes with power, restoration, and salvation. But His people were called to prepare for His arrival.

Preparation wasn't earning God's presence.

It was removing what didn't belong.

Sometimes we ask God to speak more clearly, yet we rarely make room to listen.

We pray for direction while holding tightly to distractions.

We ask Him to lead, but we keep walking our own path.

The problem isn't always that God isn't moving.

Sometimes the road has become cluttered.

A heart filled with unforgiveness struggles to hear His peace.

A life consumed by constant noise leaves little space for His voice.

Pride resists the direction that humility gladly receives.

Isaiah's message is simple:

Before expecting God to do something new, be willing to clear what has been standing in the way.

That doesn't mean becoming perfect.

It means becoming available.

God isn't looking for flawless people.

He's looking for hearts that are open enough to welcome Him.

John the Baptist later quoted this very verse as he prepared people for the coming of Jesus. His message wasn't simply, "The Messiah is coming."

It was, "Get your hearts ready."

That invitation still stands today.

We spend so much time asking God to change our circumstances.

Maybe today He's asking us to prepare our hearts instead.

Because when the way is clear, we stop resisting what He wants to do.

We recognize His voice more quickly.

We obey more readily.

We follow with fewer excuses.

Isaiah 40:3 isn't just a prophecy about Christ's first coming.

It's a reminder that every day we have a choice:

Will we let our hearts become crowded...

or will we make room for the King?

Sometimes the greatest spiritual breakthrough doesn't begin with God changing your situation.

It begins when you clear the road and simply say,

"Lord, the way is open. Come and have Your way."
